How PriceGrabber works?

PriceGrabber like all CSE's Comparison Shopping Engines, earn their revenue by displaying merchants prices and getting consumers like me and you to click on these displayed ads. The business model for PriceGrabber and all other CSE's is to give the consumer the best experience on their site so that the consumer will consistently come back to compare every product he/she will buy in the future. PriceGrabber has many competitors that offer a similar comparison service. Each will be reviewed individually and a summary will be compiled.

Why should I use PriceGrabber or any other CSE?

You just made a decision to purchase a Panasonic TH 42-PX-604 Plasma HDTV and now it boils down to "who can deliver the best price".

Choice 1 - go to 40 individual web sites and look up the prices and take notes as you accumulate each price plus the shipping charges and don't forget tax if the vendor is located in your state. The time to do this your entire weekend!

Now lets take a look at PriceGrabber!

The home page PriceGrabber.com is arranged in alphabetical order. Each main category has subcategories listed below. We will go to the consumer Electronics category and click on TV's

PriceGrabber Comparison vs. advertising?

On this very next page take note of seven subcategories within TV's.
Plasma & LCD Televisions
Projection TV's
TV/VCR/DVD Combo
Television Tube
TV Accessories and Mounts
Remote Control
Entertainment Units

Immediately below is a display from a PriceGrabber Featured Merchant - OneCall. Featured Merchant is the terminology used by PriceGrabber to describe advertiser that is paying a premium to be displayed. PriceGrabber hopes that you will click on one of the featured TV's being displayed by OneCall and purchase directly from them. These TV's are either OneCall's hottest offers or the most sought after currently by consumers. Let us click one level further into the Plasma and LCD Televisions.

On the left hand side you can further drill down by "Manufacturer Name". In the center you can find the most popular TV's. Once again The Westinghouse is classified as a "Featured Product" indicating that Westinghouse may be sponsoring (paying for that phrase) that position. Slide over to the right hand side below the price and PriceGrabber lists the number of different stores that are displaying a price for this TV. Lets click on the Panasonic TV.

You finally arrive at the PriceGrabber Panasonic product page and you want to make the purchase.

Is PriceGrabber showing you  the absolute lowest price?
Are all vendors reputable?
Will PriceGrabber speak to the vendor on my behalf and even try to get me a refund if I am not satisfied?

BuyDig.com, Beach Camera, Best Buy and Circuit City are all FEATURED MERCHANTS. Featured Merchants means that these merchants paid more than all the others to get top listing and ultimately more business from consumers looking for this TV.

After the featured listings is Shop Sunshine which is listed at the best price $1,270 for my zip code (I entered 90036). The current zip code can be found above the heading called Seller Rating.

Lets take a look at the balance of  merchants listed for this TV.
If PriceGrabber.com was meant to help the shopper find the lowest price, why aren't the prices vendors sorted by price?

Reputable merchants like Crutchfield and B&H are listed low down. You can sort merchant by BOTTOMLINEPRICE. There is another indicator that you can use to learn about vendors and that's REVIEWS. You can read reviews and learn quite a lot from previous consumer experiences. I have some doubt to the validity of all posted reviews.

BUYDIG has 20,314 reviews and Circuit City has only 82 reviews? Sounds right? NOT to me.

The first two listing on PriceGrabber belong to the same company. Is this ethical?
BeachCamera Mailing Address:

BuyDig Mailing Address:

You can use the product detail tab to get an overview of the product. Pricegrabber.com did a great job listing this information.

You decided to click on "Your Best Price" from Shop Sunshine.com
You just left PriceGrabber.com and you are now on the ShopSunshine.com website.
Who is ShopSunshine.com?

On display is an artist rendition of their store. Why can't they shop their actual store? Do they have a store?
Click on Contact us and...

They are only open 11-5 Monday through Thursday. They discourage you from calling in due to HIGH VOLUME of calls?

Before you make that purchase always look at the return police. Just in case.

Basically anything you buy is yours forever. The vague outline suggests minimum 15% fee for returns and you have to contact the manufacturer within 14 days to confirm that the product is defective.

Thank you PriceGrabber for presenting all this data. What use is it if the consumer has a bad experience from any of these vendors? I certainly wouldn't go back to PriceGrabber if this happened to me.

At the end of the day did PriceGrabber offer me the absolute lowest price?

In this case the answer may be YES. In many other cases absolutely NOT. Are you shocked! PriceGrabber.com charges vendors for some categories over $1.00 each time a consumer clicks. Imagine that you click on 10 stores each time you visit PriceGrabber.com before making a purchase. 10 merchants will each be charged $1.00 for your clicks. These costs prohibit some stores from competing in this environment. Those merchants have lower prices, however, you need to go directly to their website.
